AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State soccer team used three goals from outside the 18-yard box, scoring the most goals in a Big 12 home game since 2002 to beat the Oklahoma State Cowgirls 4-1 at the ISU Soccer Complex Friday. The win put the Cyclones one step closer to a conference tournament bid with only two games remaining. ISU entered the match in a three-way tie with OSU and Nebraska for the eighth and final spot.
"We found our forwards feet and did an excellent job of taking accurate shots from long range," Iowa State head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. "Once we got the equalizer, we knew we could be dangerous offensively."
Iowa State fell behind early in the sixth minute, 1-0, on Jesyca Rosholt's 12th goal of the season, but the Cyclones countered just 12 minutes later. Sophomore Stephanie Kaphingst took a 30-yard cross from sophomore Beth Passman and headed the ball into the back corner for her fourth goal of the season. The assist was Passman's first of the season and just the second of her career.
The Cyclones struck again just before half as Renee de St. Aubin started the long-range barrage with a bomb over OSU goalkeeper Jeanne Rankin from 20 yards out. Senior captain Kristina Baumann fed de St. Aubin for her third assist of 2005, tying her for the team lead. The goal was de St. Aubin's fifth of the season and her first in eight conference games.
"I was real proud of the way Renee stepped up and put that one in from outside," Hornbacher said. "That just set the tone for the rest of the team to do the same."

Iowa State tacked on another goal with one minute left in the match, as freshman Meghan Smith shot a rocket from 23 yards out, hitting the crossbar and bouncing in for her second career goal.
The Cyclones out-shot Oklahoma State 19-6 for the match. The 19 goals are the most for an ISU team this season in conference play. Iowa State improves to 9-5-3 overall and 4-3-1 in the Big 12.
Iowa State will host Oklahoma, Sunday at 1 p.m. at the ISU Soccer Complex.
"Our biggest game is right in front of us against Oklahoma," Hornbacher said. This was a critical game for us and now we are one step closer to where we want to be."
