Iowa State Earns Cyclone Classic Championship with Assists from Medders

AMES, Iowa - Iowa State earned its ninth consecutive Cyclone Classic championship with an 87-68 win over IPFW Friday night in Hilton Coliseum. Senior point guard Lyndsey Medders set the school record with 16 assists en route to tournament MVP honors, her third-straight Cyclone Classic team appearance.
ISU (9-2) got 22 points from freshman Heather Ezell, while senior Brittany Wilkins posted her fifth double-double of the season with 16 points and a career-best 15 rebounds. Medders added 12 points to her 16 dimes, giving her four double-doubles this season and six for her career. Freshman Nicky Wieben added 15 points, five rebounds, three blocks and three steals, joining Wilkins on the all-tournament team.
The Cyclones sprinted out to a 27-9 lead, but went just 1-of-13 until hitting another field goal at 4:31. IPFW (2-9) got four 3-pointers in that span to pull within five (33-28) at 3:49. ISU got 3-pointers from Megan Ronhovde and Wilkins to ward off the Mastodons, but Johnna Lewis-Carlisle drilled two more treys to pull IPFW within nine (45-36) at the break. Lewis-Carlisle sank six 3-pointers in the first stanza for 20 points, while Ezell had 15 points on 4-of-7 treys.
"Defensively, our attention to detail wasn't what it should be," ISU head coach Bill Fennelly said. "I think we relaxed and to her (Lewis-Carlisle) credit, she got hot."

Iowa State didn't let IPFW back into the game in the second half, leading by as much as 24 points before clearing the bench. ISU shot 46 percent in the game, including 51.7 percent in the second half. The Cyclone edged IPFW on the backboards 44-40 and limited the Mastodons to 38.8 percent shooting in the game. Lewis-Carlisle had just one 3-pointer in the second half to finish with a game-high 23 points for IPFW.
"Our starting five has been really solid, really good," Fennelly said. "I don't know what is going to happen the next 16 games, but it we will find out quickly on Wednesday."
The Cyclones open Big 12 Conference action on Wednesday against Oklahoma. Game time has been moved up to 6 p.m.
