AMES, Iowa -- The No. 10 Iowa State gymnastics team improved its record to 7-1, defeating No. 8 Nebraska at Hilton Coliseum Friday night (196.925-196.775). The squad is perfect in Big 12 Conference action with a 194.925-193.050 victory over Missouri on Jan. 7.
"It was very competitive," said head coach K.J. Kindler. "It's very intimidating to compete against a team that has a tradition like Nebraska has. You have to be on your game and we were. The door was open, and we took advantage of it. We were aggressive and didn't hold back."
Two Cyclones were involved in a four-way tie for second place on vault. Junior Laura-Kay Powell scored her career-high (9.95), joined by teammate Janet Anson.
On the uneven bars, junior Erin Dethloff tied for first with Nebraska's Desire Sniatynski with a mark of 9.875. Cyclones Jade Kvach, Laura-Kay Powell and Janet Anson tied for third with a score of 9.825 with Cornhusker Kristi Esposito.
Powell tied for runner-up honors on the balance beam in a three-way tie with Nebraska's Emily Parsons and Jamie Saas (9.85).
Dethloff and sophomore Janet Anson tied for first place on the floor exercise with Cornhusker Richelle Simpson. The trio recorded a score of 9.9. Powell landed in fourth with a mark of 9.875.
The Cyclones took the top three positions in the all-around competition, with Anson and Powell tying for first (39.5) and Dethloff finishing third (39.45).
Iowa State will travel to Iowa City to take on intrastate rival Iowa on Feb. 19 at 7 p.m.
