AMES, Iowa (AP) - Frustrated with her shooting, Iowa State's Mary Fox decided to concentrate on rebounding.
Right.
Fox came up with one measly rebound against Oklahoma State on Wednesday night - and scored a career-high 28 points, making all but one shot in the 19th-ranked Cyclones' 90-65 victory.
"It was the complete opposite," Fox said with a smile. "It just happens like that. We had a lot of good (passes). I was wide open every single time."
Katie Robinette added 25 points and 11 rebounds for Iowa State (19-4, 9-3 Big 12), which took control by finishing the first half with a 28-4 surge that included 21 straight points. It was a far cry from the Cyclones' two previous games, lopsided losses on the road to Texas Tech and Nebraska.
"Last week was hard on them, hard on everyone," Iowa State coach Bill Fennelly said. "It's nice to see them smile. Considering what we have coming up on Saturday, this was a game we obviously had to win. Somehow, some way, we had to win. We did, we'll take it and move on."
Anne O'Neil had 10 points and seven rebounds for the Cyclones, who play at No. 7 Baylor on Saturday. Lyndsey Medders matched her career high with 13 assists and scored nine points without committing a turnover.
"Thirteen assists and no turnovers at any level is a pretty impressive line," Fennelly said. "She's smart enough to know to throw it to Fox and Katie."
Oklahoma State (7-15, 2-10) never recovered from the big burst that left Iowa State ahead 49-24 at halftime. Destanie Sykes led Oklahoma State with 14 points, Nina Stone scored 12 and Devry McDonald had 11, going 3-for-4 from 3-point range.
Fox, scoreless against Texas Tech two games ago, made her first seven shots and finished 9-for-10. She hit all six of her 3-pointers and went 4-for-4 at the free-throw line.
"She was very task oriented," Oklahoma State coach Julie Goodenough said. "She came out to score tonight and just did a great job of being in a zone. When she caught the ball, she was going to let it fly."
Robinette, scoreless in a 74-59 loss at Oklahoma Sate last year, constantly beat her defender with a series of strong inside moves while making 11 of 18 shots. She played just 23 minutes.
Iowa State went through five lead changes with the Cowgirls in the early going and a little more than 11 minutes in, the Cyclones were tied at 20 with a team that had trailed Baylor 46-18 at halftime in its previous game.
Medders then converted a three-point play to break the tie, O'Neil followed with a leaner in the lane and Iowa State just kept rolling from there, scoring on nine of 11 possessions while opening a 41-20 lead.
Oklahoma State, which had made seven of its first 10 shots, went scoreless for 6 1/2 minutes, missing seven shots and turning the ball over three times.
"The big thing is when we started guarding a little bit better, that opened us up a little bit," Fennelly said. "It turns quickly in this game. You make 3s, you guard, you can score in bunches."
