AMES, Iowa - Despite a late comeback charge, Iowa State could not overcome its first-half shooting woes, dropping its second-straight home game in a 73-64 loss to Kansas State Sunday in Hilton Coliseum.
ISU junior Lyndsey Medders led all scorers with 30 points, while Cyclone senior Brittany Wilkins added 19 points and 10 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season and the 11th of her career. No other Cyclone recorded more than six points in the game and Wilkins was the only ISU player to pull down an offensive rebound.
"The (lack of) production wasn't just shots," ISU head coach Bill Fennelly said. "We didn't defend well at times and we didn't rebound well at times. Sometimes you've got to create your own luck and we're fighting that."
Kansas State (15-4, 5-3) sprinted out to a 7-0 lead before Iowa State got on the board. The Cyclones got nine of their next 13 points from Lyndsey Medders to take the lead with 11:23 left. But Iowa State went 0-of-13 from the floor during an 11-minute span, digging a hole that gave the Wildcats a 40-27 haftime lead.
Iowa State (12-6, 3-4) hit just one if its first six shots in the second half to fall behind 53-29 with 14:55 left in the game, ISU's largest deficit in the game. The Cyclones chipped away at KSU's lead and used a 10-2 run to pull within eight (59-51) with 4:37 remaining. Kansas State hit four of its last five field goals and converted on 4-of-6 free throws to hold off ISU's comeback bid.
Iowa State shot a frigid 28 percent in the first half, but sank 57.7 percent from the floor in the second stanza. KSU knocked down 45.2 percent from the floor overall and outrebounded the Cyclones 37-29. The Wildcats were lead by Claire Coggins' 21 points and got double-figure scoring from three more. Marlies Gipson posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards for KSU.
