BOULDER, Colo. -- Colorado scored on its first seven possessions to beat Iowa State, 33-16 Saturday in Dan McCarney's final road game as ISU head coach. Cyclone quarterback Bret Meyer completed 17-of-28 passes for 190 yards, including a 21-yard TD pass to Jon Davis, who made his first reception since suffering a collapsed lung two weeks ago in the Kansas State game. The touchdown pass was the 40th of Meyer's career, tying him with Todd Bandhauer (1995-98) for the Iowa State school record.
"Colorado played real inspired football today," McCarney said. "Obviously we really had some problems defensively today. There was no quit on this team, you saw that, they won't quit on their teammates, they won't quit on me, they won't quit on my coaches, but we're going to do everything we can to finish this thing out right and come up with an upset against a great Missouri team Saturday."
Iowa State plays host to Missouri Saturday at 1 p.m. in Jack Trice Stadium. It will be senior day and McCarney's 141st game as ISU's longest tenured coach (12 years). The winningest coach in Cyclone history, McCarney announced his resignation Wednesday and Saturday's game will be his final contest as Iowa State head coach.
"It's been a great 12 years," McCarney said fighting back tears. "It's going to be hard to say goodbye to the Big 12. Its been a great 12 years. I want something real good for these seniors and this football team here at the end."
Colorado scored first, driving 80 yards in four plays, the last a 26-yard TD toss from Bernard Jackson to Alvin Barnett with 13:32 left in the first quarter. Iowa State answered, Meyer driving the Cyclones 86 yards on 10 plays, capped by the TD pass to Davis. Senior Ryan Kock tallied a career single-game high 38 yards rushing on the first scoring drive alone. Kock finished the game with a career high 82 yards rushing on 18 carries. His fourth-quarter 5-yard TD run was his 18th rushing career scoring effort, tying him for 10th on the all-time ISU career list.
Colorado added field goals of 47- and 38 yards by Mason Crosby and a 5-yard TD run by Jackson to lead 20-7 at halftime. Crosby finished his career with 46 points in four games against Iowa State. The senior, whom McCarney called "the best kicker in the history of college football," was 12-of-13 on field goals against the Cyclones, and 10-of-11 on extra-point attempts in his career vs. Iowa State. -yarder that fell just short in the fourth quarter. He had one final attempt agains the Cyclones Saturday, a 65ISU kicker Bret Culbertson hit on a 27-yard field goal for the Cyclones. Culbertson is the most accurate kicker in Iowa State history, making all 71 of his career PAT tries and is 28-of-36 on field goal tries (8-of-10 this season) for a school-record success percentage of .778.
Meyer made the first reception of his career on a reverse-play 19-yard first-quarter pass from former Cyclone quarterback Austin Flynn. Flynn and fellow receiver Milan Moses finished the game with five receptions for 38 and 37 yards, respectively.
Colorado outgained Iowa State, 463-311. Jackson completed 13-of-19 passes for 200 yards a two touchdowns. Tailback Mel Holliday rushed for 126 yards on 18 carries.
