AMES, Iowa ? All-America candidate Lyndsey Medders set the Iowa State career record for assists and moved into the ISU career scoring top 10, as she led the Iowa State women's basketball team to a 71-55 win over Loyola Marymount in the final game of the American Family Insurance Classic Saturday night at Hilton Coliseum.
Medders tied and claimed the assist record on baskets by sophomore Nicky Wieben. She rifled a long pass to a sprinting Wieben at the 16:25 mark of the second half resulting in a layup and a new school record. She finished the night with nine assists, which puts the current record at 595, passing Lindsey Wilson's previous mark of 589. Medders also turned in 21 points, tying her for 10th place all-time in school history with Jolene Leseman at 1,201 points.
“I got a little emotional,” Medders said. “The biggest thing for me was having my family here. It is a record that was made and set by other people. My coaches put me in a good position and my teammates made shots. I'm just honored.”
With the win,
Medders headed the all-tournament team as the Most Valuable Player, along with teammates Wieben and Toccara Ross, who each finished the night with 16 points. Wieben had six rebounds, while Ross had seven in the winning effort. Taylor Richards from Utah State and Valerie Ogoke and Jennifer Hall from Loyola Marymount were also named to the all-tourney squad.
“I thought we beat a very good team tonight,” head coach Bill Fennelly said. “I'm glad Lyndsey could break such an important record. She's the MVP of the tournament, her family is here and she breaks the record against a team from
LMU hit a trey to open the second half, but Medders answered with a long range shot of her own and a conventional three-point play to lead 44-30. The Cyclones took their largest lead of the night with a 69-49 margin with just under three minutes to play in the contest.
The Lions were led by Amanda DeCoud with 13 points, while Jennifer Hall turned in a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.
