AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State gymnastics team, coming off the school's first-ever appearance at the NCAA Super Six Finals a year ago, is ranked No. 13 in GymInfo's preseason coaches poll released by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches.
ISU will face a series of tough competitors again this season as eight of its opponents are also ranked in the top 25, including all three Big 12 Conference foes. Nebraska, who placed second at the 2006 Big 12 Championship, leads the league with a No. 7 preseason ranking.
Defending NCAA champion Georgia earned the top spot, receiving 28 first-place votes, while Utah was ranked No. 2 with seven votes. Florida and Alabama claimed the No. 3 and No. 4 rankings, respectively.
The Cyclones will debut eight newcomers who join five returning letterwinners, including seven-time All-American Janet Anson. Anson also received Big 12 Gymnast of the Year honors in 2006. Newcomers include 14-time state club champion Katie Sweetin (Overland Park, Kan.) and the 2005 Canadian Nationals three-time champion Melanie Tham (Mississauga, Ontario).
Iowa State will begin the 2007 season on Jan. 5, at the Cancun Classic in Cancun, Mexico. The Cyclones' first home meet will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 19, at Hilton Coliseum.
