MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - No. 7 Iowa State swept all four events for the second time this season and upended 20th-ranked Minnesota 196.075-194.750 in front of 1,782 fans at the Sports Pavilion Saturday. ISU scored 49.000 or higher on vault, beam and floor and posted its second-best beam score of the season with a 49.050.
Iowa State has now won seven consecutive duals and improved to 10-2 overall, the school's third-best start in school history. The 2004 squad started 11-2 while the 1976 team finished the regular season 12-0.
"Tonight we were a little off and had to fight from beginning to end," head coach K.J. Kindler said. "Our vault and beam teams really helped save us tonight and we're going to get stronger from here on out when we struggle because now we can say we've been here before."
The Cyclones began the evening on bars and put up a 48.825, besting the Golden Gophers' 48.600. Iowa State's trio of Janet Anson, Erin Dethloff and Laura-Kay Powell tied for second, recording 9.825 each. Redshirt sophomore Jade Kvach took fourth-place, scoring a 9.700. Minnesota senior Laura Johnson won the event with a 9.900.
ISU moved to the second rotation on the vault, where it was coming off a season-best 49.300 effort in last Sunday's win against Nebraska. The ninth-ranked Iowa State vault squad scored a 49.050, making it the fifth-consecutive meet the Cyclones have scored a 49.000 or higher. This time, ISU was led by Anson's first-place 9.900. The Kansas City, Mo., native and 2005 national runner-up was the only competitor to score above a 9.900. Senior Dethloff took second, posting a 9.850 while Powell tied for third with Minnesota's Carmelina Carabajal and Laura Johnson at 9.825.
Iowa State began the third rotation with a 97.875-97.225 lead and took to the floor exercise, where ISU came into the night as the No. 5 ranked floor team in the nation. The Cyclones put up a 49.150 to the Gophers' 49.000. All five of the scores that Iowa State counted were 9.800 or higher for just the second time this season (Missouri). ISU was led by Anson's first-place 9.900. The three-time All-American, who is ranked third in the country on floor, has now scored 9.900 or higher in three-consecutive meets.
On beam, all six Iowa State competitors scored a 9.725 or higher as the team garnered its second-best beam score of the season (49.050). The ninth-ranked Cyclone beam squad swept the top four places on the event, anchored by Dethloff's season-high 9.875. Anson and Powell tied for second at 9.825, while junior Ashley Alden took fourth with a 9.800.
"Erin (Dethloff) tweaked her ankle on the floor and was really sore and I was ecstatic with the way she pulled it together and won the beam," Kindler said.
Anson won the all-around for the fourth time this season, scoring a season-high 39.450 while Dethloff took second with a 39.375.
Iowa State's All-Americans, Anson, Dethloff and Powell, hit on 11-of-11 routines combined against Minnesota and have now hit 58-of-their-last-63 routines.
With the win, the Cyclones moved to a perfect 3-0 vs. Big Ten Conference foes this season, including wins over Iowa and Illinois earlier in the season. Coupled with its win at Minnesota Saturday night, the Cyclones have now won 11-of-12 events vs. Big Ten competition.
Iowa State will play host to the Golden Gophers on Friday, March 3 at 7 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum.
