HOUSTON, Texas - Ashley Killeen drove in three RBI and Alyssa Ransom pitched six strong innings to lead Iowa State past Rhode Island, 7-4, in Crowne Plaza Classic action in Houston, Texas on Saturday night.
Katie Reichling and Jessica Quade ripped back-to-back doubles as Iowa State (2-5) exploded for a four-run first inning to grab its first lead of the tournament.
After Kristy Olsen and Fallon Johnson reached on singles to open the bottom of the first, Reichling smacked a double to left center to score Olsen. Quade followed with a double down the left field line to score Johnson and Reichling and make it 3-0 in favor of the Cyclones.
The Cyclones added another run when Whitney Perkins, who pinch ran for Quade, came around to score on an error by the Rams (0-3).
ISU added another in the second on an infield single by Ashley Killeen that scored Ellen Buehner. Buehner struck out to lead off the inning but cruised into second base on a passed ball on the third strike. A stolen base by Buehner allowed her to score on Killeen's infield single.
That would be all the run support Ransom (1-2) would need as she cruised to her first win of the season. Ransom allowed one run on three hits in six innings of work.
Christine Gentile broke up Ransom's shutout bid with her fourth inning home run to left centerfield, cutting the Cyclones' lead to 5-1.
Rhode Island put a scare in the Cyclones, adding three runs in the top of the seventh off of Reichling, who relieved Ransom to start the inning.
Killeen's 2-for-4 effort paced the way for ISU while Reichling and Kristy Olsen eached added two hits.
Jill Anderson (0-2) took the loss for the Rams, allowing five runs on five hits in three innings.
ISU will face Houston at 8:40 p.m. on Saturday.
