Cyclones Drop Close Match To Missouri, 4-3

AMES, Iowa - Iowa State freshman Kara Hickey won her first Big 12 conference match Friday as the Cyclones hosted Missouri at Forker Courts. Missouri won the match, 4-3.

Hickey paired up with senior Elizabeth Chermel in the No. 2 doubles slot and helped Iowa State capture the doubles point with their win over Mizzou's Erika Josbena and Amanda Pratzel, 8-5. In the No. 1 doubles spot, ISU junior Jill Palen and redshirt junior Eve Soriano defeated Yelena Olshanskaya and Krissy Svetlic, 8-4. At No. 3 doubles Cyclones Danielle Uscinski and Chrissy Derouin picked up the third doubles match winning 8-5.

Hickey, a Columbia, Mo. native, defeated Lubica Nadasska after playing three sets in the No. 2 spot. Hickey fell in the first match after the tiebreaker 6-7 (5), but came back to capture the second and third sets 6-3, 6-2 respectively.

ISU's Derouin quickly defeated Valeria Dandik in two sets 6-0, 6-2, to round out the scoring for Iowa State. Missouri captured the rest of the singles matches to defeat the Cyclones.

On Saturday Iowa State will honor Cyclone seniors Elizabeth Chermel and Charlotte Ljungkrantz as they close out the 2006 home season against Nebraska-Omaha. The match is scheduled to begin at noon at Forker Courts. If inclement weather arises, the match will be moved indoors to Ames Racquet and Fitness.
