AMES, Iowa - Derek Burton, former assistant head coach at Missouri Valley College, will join the Iowa State soccer staff as an assistant coach, ISU head coach Rebecca Hornbacher announced Wednesday.
"Derek will be a tremendous addition to our coaching staff," Hornbacher said. "He has over 10 years of experience coaching competitive soccer and we are looking forward to him stepping in and helping to contribute to the success we've had here."
The St. Louis native owned a 54-28-7 record at Missouri Valley and coached 22 all-conference, seven all-region, four All-Americans and 12 All-America Scholar Athletes in his five years. He was the 2002 Heart of America Conference Coach of the Year, leading the team to the quarterfinals of the NAIA Region V playoffs.
"I just want to thank the athletic department administration and coach Hornbacher for the opportunity to be apart of this program," Burton said. "You always look for schools that have a winning environment coupled with talented players. Iowa State fits that description and I am looking forward to meeting an exceeding the expectations of the soccer program."
Before his stint at Missouri Valley, Burton served one season as the head women's and assistant men's soccer coach at Mount Senario College, leading the school to a No. 10 seed in the NAIA National Tournament. Burton then took a position as the head women's soccer coach at Morehead State University in Kentucky, where he helped establish the varsity program. In just three years with the Eagles, Burton more than tripled the program's winning percentage.
Prior to MSU, he was an assistant at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock, his alma mater, for one season following his collegiate playing career. In 1998, Burton was drafted to play professionally by the Pensacola Flyers of the Eastern Indoor Soccer League.
While a player at UALR, he was team captain for his junior and senior seasons and led the team to the Sun Belt Conference Championship twice.
Burton earned a bachelor's degree in health education from Arkansas-Little Rock in 1997. He received a master's degree in sports administration from Morehead State in 1999. Burton is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and holds a United States Soccer Federation "B" License.
