AMES, Iowa- Jay Santos was named as an assistant coach in August of 2006. Santos will serve as the recruiting coordinator for head coach Jay Ronayne. Santos comes to Iowa State from Ohio State where he spent two seasons as an assistant coach. His primary responsibly was recruiting correspondence.
Prior to Ohio State, Santos served as women's team director at Somersault Gymnastics Center in Stoughton, Mass., for four years.
Santos graduated from the University of Massachusetts in 1995 with a degree in business administration in operations management. He competed with the men's gymnastics team for four seasons. He was voted co-captain three times and was twice named Most Improved Gymnast. During his stay at UMass, Santos was a member of the 1995 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference as well a member of the New England regional championship squad from 1992-95. Individually, Santos was a three-time co-captain for UMass (1993-95) and was the recipient of UMass' coveted "Hulk Award," given to the most consistent pommel horse competitor. Santos was also an officer and founding member for the Student-athlete Advisory Committee at UMass.
Santos has coached at Somersault for eight years. During his first four years he split time between the men's and women's teams before taking over the women's program in 2001. He was responsible for all facets of the women's program and produced several Junior Olympic, state champion and regional qualifiers.
Santos also served as a nationally rated men's gymnastics judge from 1997-2001, working collegiate dual meets as well as junior Olympic state meets and regional championships. He was a member of the New England Gymnastics Judging Association and Eastern Judging Association.
