Odino Named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week
Iowa State freshman forward Lauren Odino was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week by the Big 12 Conference on Tuesday. The honor comes after she scored a goal and added the game-winning assist in the Cyclones' two wins last week. Against North Dakota State, she posted her second career goal and helped lead ISU to a 2-0 victory. ISU also came from behind to defeat Nebraska in the Cyclones' Big 12 opener. Trailing 2-1 with 52 seconds remaining, Odino went after a pass looking for the game-tying goal when she was fouled. After a penalty kick sent the game into overtime, she assisted the game-winning tally at the 109:39 mark. Currently, Odino is second on the team in goals (two) and points (five).
Last Week...
The Iowa State soccer team stunned Nebraska in a double-overtime battle, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at the ISU Soccer Complex. With less than a minute in regulation and trailing, 2-1, ISU's Stephanie Kaphingst put away a penalty kick to send the game into overtime. The Cyclones dominated both overtime periods, outshooting the Huskers 9-1 during OT and 24-14 overall. The Iowa State game-winning goal was scored by freshman Lauren Fader with 21 seconds remaining, the first goal of her career.
The Cyclones also knocked off North Dakota State, 2-0, Wednesday night at home. Brittanie Waddell scored her fourth goal of the season off the double-assist from Leslie Hill and Elise Reid nine minutes into the game. Odino scored in the second half, her second goal of the season. The early lead was representative of the Cyclones' early offensive domination. In the first half, Iowa State outshot North Dakota State, 10-3. Hill had several scoring opportunities that just missed. The Bison picked up the offense at the start of the second half, but the Cyclone defense held NDSU to a total of seven shots. ISU goalkeeper Ann Gleason had four saves on the Bison's four shots-on-goal in the second shutout of her career. Beth Passman, Amanda Purple and Kate Kirwan put pressure on the ball in the Cyclone defense.
