AMES, Iowa- After a stellar season opener at the ISU Holiday Preview meet in December, the women's track and field team returned to action in winning fashion on Friday at the ISU Open.
Freshman Lashawn Wright ran the second-fastest leg for the Cyclone crew playing a role in capturing the women's 4x300-meter title. The newcomer, teaming with sophomore Leia Jackson and senior sprinters Sara Boisen and Rebecca Williams, pulled away from the rest of the competition early on and never looked back. Williams ran the first leg and immediately took control. Boisen anchored the team to a first-place finish, crossing the line with a time of 2:42.95.
"Lashawn competed very well today,"said sprints and hurdles coach Scott Roberts. "I expect good things tomorrow in the 60-meter dash. She ran neck and neck with the competition forcing the other girl into a mistake at the top of the curve. She ended up giving us a big lead and it helped tremendously."
The Cyclone squad got off to an strong start early with newcomers Jenna Caffrey and Wright placing in the top tier of finishers in the 200-meter dash. Wright's effort of 25.51 gave her a third-place finish in the dash. Caffrey finished in ninth, recording a time of 26.13.
Saturday's running events begin at 10:25 a.m. with the cross country all-American Lisa Koll competing first for the Cyclones in the 3,000-meter run. Field events are scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m. with the high jump, featuring senior Leigh Wagner. Complete results from the meet will be posted following the conclusion of the meet on Saturday.
