*The tournament will be conducted in a championship-style format, with all teams playing two games...Iowa State will play at 8 p.m., on Saturday regardless if it loses to Winston-Salem State on Friday...if ISU does lose in game #1, the championship game will be played at 5:30 p.m.
Cyclone Notebook
-Iowa State officially begins its season this weekend, playing host to the American Family Insurance Cyclone Challenge, Nov. 9-10...ISU's season-opener on Nov. 9 is the earliest start to a season in school history.
-ISU closed out its exhibition season with a 2-0 record, defeating Dubuque (66-38) and EA Sports (74-63).
-All four schools competing this weekend (Winston-Salem State, Centenary, Lipscomb, Iowa State) will be playing in its first games of the season...ISU has never faced the other three teams competing in the tournament.
-ISU will likely have starting center Jiri Hubalek return by Friday...he missed both exhibition games after suffering an avulsion fracture on his right foot on Oct. 27...junior transfer Alex Thompson started in his place in the two exhibition games.
-ISU has nine new players in uniform who have a chance to play in their first regular-season game this weekend...the Cyclones have 10 new players on the roster, but freshman Lucca Staiger was declared ineligible by the NCAA Certifaction process.
-True freshman Craig Brackins will likely start in the Cyclone opener...it will mark the sixth season in a row where ISU started a freshman in the first game of the season.Cyclone Challenge Schedule*
Exhibition Season Review
-The Cyclones improved their overall exhibition record to 39-4 with two preseason wins over Dubuque (66-38) and EA Sports (74-63)...starting center Jiri Hubalek missed both exhibition games while nursing a broken foot and Rahshon Clark started in the Dubuque win, but missed the EA Sports game to rest a sore knee...both players are expected to play this weekend.
-ISU was led by sophomore Wesley Johnson and freshman Craig Brackins in the EA Sports victory...Johnson recorded a double-double with 18 points and 10 boards, while Brackins had 17 points and five caroms...both Johnson and Brackins scored in double figures in the two exhibition games, averaging 14.5 and 13.5 points, respectively.
-Junior college transfer Sean Haluska started in the place of Clark vs. EA Sports, tallying 12 points, including two key jumpers in the final five minutes to pace ISU to victory...Haluska had two of ISU's 10 treys in the game.
-Junior college transfer Bryan Petersen started both exhibition games at point guard...Petersen had six dimes against EA Sports and averaged 5.0 assists in the two exhibition games...Petersen had 10 assists and just two turnovers in the two games.
-Of the nine players that played against EA Sports, only two (Wesley Johnson and Cory Johnson) competed for the Cyclones last season.
-ISU had a 20/10 assist-turnover ratio and tallied 13 steals vs. EA Sports.
-The Cyclones had a total of nine newcomers see playing time for the first time in the two exhibition games.
-ISU shot 47.5 percent from 3-point range in the two exhibition games, making 19-of-40 shots from downtown.
-38 of ISU's 53 field goals in the two exhibition games were accompanied by an assist for a 71.6 percentage.
-ISU forced over 20 turnovers in both games for a 22.5 opponent turnover average.
-ISU averaged 43.5 points in the first half and 26.5 points in the second half in the two exhibition games.
A Closer Look At Winston-Salem State (0-0)
-Winston Salem-State begins its regular-season in the Cyclone Challenge.
-The Rams return all five starters from last year's 5-24 team...WSSU was an independent last season and is still in the "transitional period" of joining NCAA Division I after competing at the Division II level...the Rams are members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) for the first time this season, but only on a limited basis, so they won't be eligible for postseason play.
-Sophomore guard Darius Floyd is WSSU's top returning scorer, averaging 11.5 points and hitting 51 treys as a freshman last season...Floyd, who hails from Gastonia, N.C., shot 34.5 percent from downtown last season.
-Senior Roy Peake, a 5-11, 170-pound guard from Thomasville, N.C., is back running the offense...Peake, who averaged 4.0 points last year, led the team in assists (132) and steals (57) in 2006-07.
-Darrell Wonge, a 6-6 senior Lakeview, N.Y., and Jamal Durham, a 6-6 junior from Winston-Salem, N.C., return in the middle after posting nearly identical numbers a year ago...the pair both averaged 8.1 points and 4.6 rebounds last season.
-The Rams shot 35.9 percent from the floor last year while giving up 49.2 percent to its opponents.
-WSSU is coached by Bobby Collins, who is in his second season with the Rams...Collins spent 11 years at Hampton before arriving at WSSU...he was an assistant from 1996-2002 and then head coach from 2002-06...Collins was an assistant with the Pirates when they upset No. 2 seed Iowa State, 58-57 in the 2001 NCAA Tournament.
-NBA Hall-of-Famer Earl "The Pearl" Monroe played at Winston-Salem State...he led the Rams to the 1967 NCAA Division II national championship.
-WSSU athletics director Dr. Percy "Chico" Caldwell received his Ph.D from Iowa State University...while in Ames, he developed a nationally known exercise workout as part of his doctoral dissertation called "Chicometrics."
-Iowa State and Winston-Salem State have never met.
A Closer Look At Centenary (0-0)
-Centenary, located in Shreveport, La., will be playing its first regular-season game in the Cyclone Challenge this weekend...the Gents had one tune-up this week, losing to LSU-Shreveport, 80-72...the Gents held a six-point halftime lead and shot over 50 percent in the second half, but 26 team turnovers hurt their chances...Centenary made 11 3-pointers in the game.
-Chase Adams led the team with 18 points...Justin Glenn came off the bench to score 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including a 3-of-4 effort from downtown.
-The Gents return three starters from last year's 10-21 team, finishing 3-11 to earn a seventh-place tie in the Mid-Continent Conference.
-Centenary is in its first season in the Summit League where they are picked to finish ninth out of 10 teams in the coaches poll...the Gents' top returner is Tyrone Hamilton, who earned second-team all-Mid-Continent honors in 2006-07...a local product from Shreveport, the 6-0, 200-pound junior guard averaged 15.8 points and 3.3 assists last season...Hamilton is a first-team preseason all-league choice.
-Hamilton ranked fifth in the league in 3-pointers made (67) and recorded 20 points or more nine times last season.
-Nick Stallings, a 6-1, junior from New Orleans, returns at one of the guard positions...Stallings started 18 games last season, averaging 8.5 points and 3.2 rebounds...he ranked seventh in the league in steals a year ago at 1.29 spg.
-Sophomore Chase Adams, a 5-10, 175-pound point guard from Baltimore, Md., produced a terrific rookie campaign last year...Adams led the conference in thefts last season, recording 52 steals for a 1.79 spg average...Adams, who averaged 5.7 ppg, also led the league in assist/turnover ratio, dishing out 90 assists to just 52 turnovers.
-The Gents are a bit inexperienced up front...sophomore Jerrald Bonham is a strong candidate for one of the post positions...a 6-8, 210-pound Plano, Texas native, Bonham averaged 2.3 points and 2.6 rebounds while starting 17 times last year.
-Centenary is led by third-year head coach Rob Flaska...Flaska was an assistant at TCU and Arkansas before taking over the reins of the Gents program.
-Robert "The Chief" Parish, who helped lead the Boston Celtics to three NBA titles in the 1980s, played at Centenary.
-Centenary and Iowa State have never met.
A Closer Look At Lipscomb (0-0)
-Lipscomb, located in Nashville, Tenn., will play its first regular-season games this weekend at the Cyclone Challenge...the Bisons won a pair of exhibition games last week, defeating Tusculum, 81-59 and Freed-Hardeman, 81-68...Eddie Ard led LU with 10 points...LU shot a scorching 67.7 percent from the field (21-31) against Tusculum.
-In the Freed-Hardeman win, Thomas Pfaff and Josh Slater each scored 14 points to pace the Bisons...LU forced 26 turnovers and tallied 12 steals in the win.
-The Bisons return three starters from last year's 18-13 team...LU is predicted to finish fourth in the preseason Atlantic Sun Coaches poll.
-LU's top player is Ard, who begins his fourth year as a starter for the Bisons...Ard, a 6-5, 215-pound senior from LaPlace, La., has put up outstanding numbers in his first three seasons...a preseason first-team all-Atlantic Sun choice, Ard averaged 15.0 points and 5.8 boards a game last year while earning second-team all-Atlantic Sun honors.
-Ard already ranks fourth on Lipscomb's all-time scoring list (Division I only) with 1,156 career points...he ranked first in the Atlantic Sun in free-throw percentage last year (83.6 pct.) and was fifth in the league in scoring (15.0 ppg)...Ard was a first-team all-Atlantic Sun choice in 2005-06, averaging 16.2 ppg as a sophomore.
-Ard played for the Reach USA team, a squad comprised primarily of SEC players that toured China in the summer.
-Junior guard Michael Lusk returns as a starter in the backcourt for the Bisons...Lusk, a native of Marietta, Ga., started 25 games last year, averaging 5.5 points.
-Jason Hopkins, a 6-7, 230-pound center, is the Bisons top returnee in the post...the Seattle, Wash., native averaged 6.0 points and 5.3 rebounds last year...Hopkins led the squad in field goal percentage at 59.3 percent.
-Lipscomb is coached by Scott Sanderson, who has coached the Bisons in all eight seasons of NCAA Division I competition...Sanderson was named Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year in 2006 after leading LU to a 21-11 record and an NIT appearance.
-Lipscomb switched from NAIA to the NCAA at the beginning of the 1999-2000 season.
-Lipscomb holds the distinction of having college basketball's greatest scorer and most prolific 3-point shooter...from 1991-94, John Pierce scored 4,230 points when the school was an NAIA member...that is the most career points ever scored by a college basketball player at any level...Andy McQueen made 515 3-pointers in his career, which is also the most-ever by any collegiate basketball player.
-Iowa State and Lipscomb have never met.
NBA Heritage
-Iowa State has a number of players on its roster with ties to the NBA.
-Freshman Charles Boozer and junior Sean Haluska have brothers who are on current NBA rosters. Boozer's brother, Carlos, is one of the top post players in the NBA, making the 2006-07 All-Star team. Boozer averaged 20.9 points and 11.7 rebounds in 2006-07, leading the Utah Jazz to the Western Conference Finals. He is also a member of the USA Basketball Select team that will compete for a Gold medal at the 2008 Olympics Beijing.
-Haluska's brother, Adam, who played one year at Iowa State (2002-03) before transferring to Iowa, is a rookie with the New Orleans Hornets. Haluska led the Big Ten in scoring last year, averaging 20.5 ppg while earning first-team all-Big Ten honors.
-Freshman Diante Garrett also has outstanding basketball roots. His father, Dick, played five seasons in the NBA for the Los Angeles Lakers, Buffalo Braves, New York Knicks and Milwaukee Bucks, averaging 10.3 ppg. Garrett played in the 1970 NBA Finals for the Lakers against the Knicks.
Freshman Starters In Season Openers
-Heralded rookie sensation Craig Brackins, a 6-10 freshman from Palmdale, Calif., will likely get the starting nod against Winston-Salem State on Friday...Brackins started both exhibition games and was ISU's go-to player in the post in the absence of Jiri Hubalek...if he does start, it would mark the sixth season in a row where the Cyclones inserted a freshman into the starting lineup in the season-opener.
