AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State gymnastics team is 17th in the GymInfo Preseason Poll, released this week.
The Cyclones are coming off a season in which they tied for second in the NCAA Regional, and missed qualifying for the NCAA Championships by two-tenths of a point. The Cyclones return 12 letterwinners, but none of the returners have competed for more than one season at Iowa State.
“It is great to be picked by the coaches as one of the top 25 teams in the country,” head coach Jay Ronayne said. “I'm somewhat surprised that we are picked that high in the preseason. The preseason ranking shows some faith in the relative inexperience of the 2008 Cyclone squad. We will be relying on seven sophomores, three freshmen, a lone senior, and three juniors, who each have only one year of competition experience behind them. I am counting on their talent, heart and determination to outweigh their inexperience. It's nice to get the ranking of 17th, but we have goals for this team that far exceed our preseason ranking. After it is all said and done, we just might surprise a lot of folks this year.”
All four Big 12 teams were ranked in the preseason top 25, led by defending champion Nebraska at No. 7. Georgia headlined the preseason poll, winning 28 first-place votes and easily claiming the top spot.
The Cyclones will begin the 2008 season on Jan. 11, playing host to Nebraska, at 7 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum.
