AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State women's soccer coach Rebecca Hornbacher is stepping away from her position after six seasons to “begin a new chapter in my life.” Hornbacher made the announcement Monday.
“I am getting married this spring so it's an appropriate time to make a lifestyle change and turn the page on my personal story,” Hornbacher said. “I will be moving to Omaha to be closer to my family and to start my future with my fianc?.”
Hornbacher leaves ISU as the winningest coach in school history, with 45 wins during her six seasons at the Cyclone helm. She guided Iowa State to its only NCAA Tournament in 2005. ISU associate head coach Scott Ebke will serve as interim head coach.
“I'm so very grateful for the support that I've received from Iowa State University staff and the opportunity they gave me to continue leading the Cyclone soccer program. I would like to continue working with young people and, hopefully can do so, in the Omaha area.”
Iowa State's soccer team posted an 8-6-5 record in 2007, earning a berth in the Big 12 Conference postseason tournament. The season included wins over nationally-ranked Oklahoma State and Missouri and a 1-1 draw with third-ranked Texas. The Cyclones lost in the Big 12 tournament, taking No. 2 Texas A&M to the wire, with the Aggies prevailing in a shootout.
“We are extremely grateful for Rebecca's dedication and loyalty to both the school and her student-athletes,” said Senior Associate Athletics Director Dr. Calli Sanders, the sports administrator for soccer. “Rebecca's knowledge of the game, passion and determination resulted in the first national tournament game in our program's 11-year history. She was instrumental in giving ISU an identity on the collegiate soccer landscape.”
Hornbacher was a goalie at Virginia and then for two years at Nebraska, where she earned All-America honors. She coached at Baylor, where she was interim head coach and as an assistant at Hartford before joining Iowa State as an assistant coach in June of 2002. She assumed interim head coaching duties at ISU just weeks after coming to Ames.
