Anson On "Good Works Team"

IRVING, Texas? Seven-time Iowa State All-American gymnast Janet Anson was named to the 2007 Big 12 Conference Winter Sports “Good Works” Team in recognition of community service efforts by league student-athletes, the conference announced Monday.

Anson is a senior from Kansas City, Mo., majoring in health and human performance. She is a three-year member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) for ISU athletes.

This year, Anson has participated in numerous community service projects including the Lutheran Services' in Iowa's Beloit Center Beloit Blue Sky Days, a carnival and entertainment event to raise money to help fund programs and services for children and families served by Beloit in Ames.

Additionally, she helped SAAC prepare and deliver Thanksgiving food baskets for underprivileged families in Ames, helped deliver presents to children at the Beloit Center for the Adopt-an-Angel Program and was part of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Celebration.

“Our latest project for SAAC was helping with Relay for Life here in Ames,” Anson said. “The gymnastics team was not able to be there to walk at the event, but we still helped raise money for the people who did participate. It's a good way for us [student-athletes] to get out and help the community.”

The event to raise money and awareness was held Feb. 2-3 and raised over $47,000 to help the American Cancer Society save lives and empower people to fight back against the disease.

Anson has also been on the SAAC Community Outreach Committee as a sponsor for YMCA Healthy Kids Day, a project promoting fitness fun for kids.

The Big 12 Winter Sports “Good Works” Team is made up of 12 students, one from each member institution. Each student-athlete was selected by their institution for recognition based on significant community service, good academic standing and participation in a Big 12 sponsored sport. The winter team consists of athletes from men's and women's basketball, men's and women's swimming, gymnastics, and wrestling. This is the inaugural winter team and there will also be a spring team.
