While Alison Lacey may be an ordinary name, Alison Lacey is no ordinary individual. In addition to being a freshman starter on
Before coming to
“I played on an Australian club team growing up because we didn't have high school sports,” explained Lacey. “We were traveling every weekend and played in a championship somewhere every year. It took the whole year. My brother played on a club team as well. We both played for our state.”
Lacey's twin brother, Mark, traveled to
“Back home, Mark and I always played together,” Lacey said. “I always say I'm better, but he's pretty good.”
Having her brother only 12 miles away in Boone has helped Lacey transition into college life over 9,000 thousand miles from home. But for the last month, Lacey's parents have been visiting
“There is more excitement and enthusiasm coming out on the floor to show them what I've learned,” Lacey said.
Lacey's parents arrived in
“They just told me good game afterwards,” remembered Lacey. “With them there, it added a little motivation. Back home, they always traveled. They traveled across the country to see my brother and I play. They spent all their money on us so we could play basketball, so it was nice to perform well for them.”
In addition to being dedicated basketball fans, Lacey's parents also watched their daughter play netball in
“Netball was like playing club basketball,” Lacey said, “but it is not that popular and more of a ?girlie' sport. I liked it and it was different. It gave me a break from basketball. I thought of playing both when I was growing up, but then I had to choose.”
Through her strong performance on the hardwood this season, it seems that Lacey made the right choice.
She is averaging seven points, four rebounds, and two assists per game as a freshman on the squad.
Even with her standout statistics, Lacey isn't allowing herself time to settle.
“We have to keep going strong,” said Lacey. “We only have a couple weeks left. I'm just trying to add to the team more with Lyndsey (Medders) being out. Heather (Ezell) and I have to step up. Thankfully, being the point guard isn't completely out of position for me.”
Though Lacey played point guard for her state in
“Coming in, I didn't expect to be a point guard,” Lacey explained. “I thought I'd be out on the wing. The coaches told me I would be playing point guard, so I happily accepted it. It is different, definitely on a new level that I have to step up to. It's hard, but I like it.”
At the conclusion of this year's season, Lacey will continue intensifying her workouts in hopes to help the team transition into next season as smoothly as possible.
“This summer I'm going to stay in
Luckily, this Australian twin won't be without her other half, keeping the tradition alive.
“I won't be alone,” said Lacey. “My brother is planning on staying and working out as well.”
