The Cyclone squad brings a slew of contenders to the table including hurdler Rebecca Williams. The
“Rebecca has a chance to do something very special this weekend,” said sprints and hurdles coach Scott Roberts. “She has a great shot at winning a Big 12 Conference title. She has really peaked at the right time and I think she is ready to run fast.”
Veteran leader Sara Boisen will make her effort at a Big 12 title in the 600-yard run. Boisen currently holds the third-fastest time in the conference less than two seconds behind
Veteran experience from Boisen and Williams will combine with Cyclone freshman talent to score points for the squad. Standouts Jenna Caffrey and Lashawn Wright will make their Big 12 debut in front of a packed homestretch. Caffrey enters the meet with the fifth-fastest hurdle time in the conference with a time of 8.52 seconds. Wright will make her league debut in the 60- and 200-meter dashes.
After shattering a school record and provisionally qualifying twice for the NCAA meet, freshman Lisa Koll will compete in her first Big 12 track and field championship. Koll will have her hands full this weekend, competing against Texas Tech's Sally Kipyego. Kipyego is the nation's top 3,000-meter runner and ranks second in the nation in the 5,000.
“Lisa has had a tremendous off-season,” Lee said. “She used the summer and fall to dedicate herself to the program and it has paid off. When we get into events such as the Big 12 meet, things get complicated but she always keeps it simple. She goes out and runs and that's the secret. Sometimes you have to be able to shut it off between the ears and just go out and run”
Senior Jenny Mockler will set the pace in the middle distance events. In a tightly-packed field of competitors, Mockler holds the conference's second fastest time in the 1,000-meter run with an effort of 2:52.09 at the ISU Open.
After redshirting last season, junior Agata Kosuda will make her return to the conference meet in the triple jump. In 2005, Kosuda placed fourth in that event at the Big 12 indoor meet. The jumper has only competed in one meet this season, in which she qualified provisionally for the NCAA Championships in March.
Competition starts with multi-events Friday at 9 a.m. and running events begin at 1:40 p.m. Saturday's action starts with multi-event competition at 9 a.m. Field events start at noon and running events start at 1:30 p.m.
