AMES, Iowa--Iowa State started the ISU Classic with success when senior Neil Hines, who sat in third place in the heptathlon after day one, qualified provisionally for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Lied Recreation Athletic Facility on Friday.
Hines' 5,350 points surpassed the provisional qualifying mark of 5,300 points for the national meet. The Nebraska native recorded a personal best in the pole vault (16-0 ?) to pull him into second place going into the final event of the competition. Hines needed to run at least a 3:01.00 in the 1,000-meter run to meet provisional marks. He proved successful with a time of 2:53.67 in the event.
ISU's win of the day came from Guor Majak in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 14:24.39. The freshman from Concord, N.H. distanced himself from the pack with seven laps to go and ended up winning with a seven-second lead over Tyler Sigl of UW-Platteville. This was Majak's first win as a Cyclone.
“I felt the pace was a little slower than I expected so when it came to the seventh lap I knew no one would be able to go out ahead with me,” Majak said after the race. “It was the right time in the race to do it. It feels good to be able to win with the Cyclone jersey on. It's good for my teammates and good for my school.”
Sterling Frison secured a spot in Saturday's 60-meter hurdles semifinals for the Cyclones. The junior sprinted a career best 8.28 in the event to qualify for the semifinals.
Action resumes Saturday at 9:25 a.m. with the women's 3,000-meter run.
