LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla.—The Iowa State men's track and field opened up the outdoor season with two second-place finishes on the first day of the Walt Disney World Invitational on Friday at the Wide World of Sports Complex.
Freshman Robbie Utterback started his outdoor season strong in the discus with a second-place finish. Utterback opened up with a throw of 152-3 in his first competition for Iowa State. He competed unattached for Iowa State during the indoor season.
The 4x200-meter relay team consisting of Elijah Braimah, Tony Stanfield, Jared Graham and Jared Lewis took second with a time of 1:23.58. The relay squad finished behind the Florida State team that finished with a time of 1:22.91. The 1600-sprint medley team also performed well, posting a third place finish with a time of 3:28.56.
Senior Kellen Burl will compete in the 110-meter hurdles finals after qualifying in today's race with a time of 14.48, a personal record. He goes into the final competition tomorrow with the fifth fastest time in the field.
Competition will resume tomorrow at 11 a.m. with the women's shuttle hurdle relay. Field events begin at noon with the men's shot put and pole vault. The meet will conclude with the men's 4x400-meter relay, set to run at 4:25 p.m. All times are Eastern Standard Time.
