Cyclones First in Six Events at Des Moines

AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State men's track and field team divided and conquered at the John Jacob Invitational in Norman, Okla. and the Jim Duncan Invitational in Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday racking up an electrifying six victories.

In Des Moines, Elijah Braimah ran his best meet of his outdoor season, winning both the 200-meter and the 400-meter dashes. Braimah won in 21.51 and 48.17 respectively. These are the senior's first victories of the outdoor season in individual races.

Another champion for ISU came in the high jump, when Julian Morris jumped a 6-6 ? for his first victory, indoors or outdoors, in his young career. This marked his second competition of the outdoor season, with his other coming three weeks ago at the Walt Disney World Invitational.

“I thought the guys competed well and handled the weather well today,” said Iowa State men's track and field head coach Steve Lynn.

The Cyclone throwers had a tremendous day, grabbing wins in the shot put, javelin and discus. The young squad broke out on Saturday after steadily improving over the year.

Newcomer Stefan Tauber threw the javelin 173-09, defeating the next closest thrower by over five feet. This is Tauber's first javelin competition of the year. The junior's main event is the long jump.

Freshman Robbie Utterback dominated the discus throw, taking first place with a throw of 158-05. Sophomore Zach Brouillette ended the day strong for the throwers with a first-place toss of 50-06 in the shot put. Utterback's toss of 48-09 made him runner-up in the event.

In Oklahoma, senior Jared Graham ran for the first time this outdoor season, placing third in the 400-meter run and eighth in the 200-meter run. The Neola native ran a 47.26 and 21.81, respectively.

Jared Lewis took fourth in the 100-meters with a time of 10.74. The Northern Colorado transfer also ran the 200-meters for the first time this season and placed fifth with a time of 21.60.

Cold and windy conditions hampered both meets for the second week in a row, frustrating the coaching staff.

“It's frustrating because we're ready to really have some great performances,” Lynn said. “I think we'll get them next week in Arkansas to get ready for the Drake Relays which is always a fun meet.”

The track squad heads south next week to Fayetteville, Ark. for the John McDonnell Invitational and west for the Nebraska Open.
