For the first time in her collegiate career, freshman Jenna Caffrey walked away with a hurdle crown after blowing away the competition in the 100-meter hurdles. Caffrey crossed the finish line with a time of 14.05 seconds, beating out the closest competitor by nearly a second.
“It is always challenging to get a victory at the collegiate level as a freshman, but Jenna pulled it off today,” said sprints and hurdles coach Scott Roberts. “She came out today and dominated the field and it was a very impressive race. We will work hard in practice this week and hopefully we can get her to hit the regional qualifying mark next weekend in
Senior leader Jenny Mockler was the second piece of the puzzle for the Cyclones on Saturday, winning the 1,500-meter run in a close race. Mockler set a career-best time in the event, finishing in 4:31.39. The
“Jenny had a very good race today in conditions that were not so ideal for running,” said head coach Dick Lee. “The race was tight, but she ran a good steady pace early on and it was a great effort on her part to pull ahead down the home stretch.”
Lisa Koll brought home the third crown of the day for the squad, clocking a time of 9:29.00 in the 3,000 meters. Koll, only a freshman, has earned All-American accolades in cross country and has established herself as the most acclaimed distance runner on the Cyclone roster. The
“After winning the 1,500-meter run, Jenny Mockler came back and paced the field in the 3,000 for the first mile and it helped push Lisa early in the race,” Lee said. “After that, Lisa kept things rolling, running a race that she looked very comfortable in. She felt good and made it look easy today.”
Priya Hoze earned the final title for the Cyclones on Saturday, winning the triple jump with a leap of 40-10 1/4. Hoze's jump shattered a career best set her sophomore season by nine inches. The senior has made vast improvements since the beginning of the season coming off a redshirt year due to injury.
The women's track squad had a stellar day at the invite. Leia Jackson, Megan Nielsen, Heather Gilliland, Amy Waggoner and Caffrey, all set personal-best times in their individual events.
