AMES, Iowa -- Two-time Nebraska high school shot put champion Luke Pinkelman has signed a national letter of intent to compete in track and field. Pinkelman, a senior from Cozad, Neb., will also be given an opportunity to walk on to the Iowa State football team this fall.
"Dan O'Mara did a great job in recruiting Luke," Iowa State head men's track coach Steve Lynn said. "We think Luke is one of the top five throwers in the country among competitors who have great college potential in both the shot put and the discus. He is a great pickup for our program."
As a junior at Cozad High School, Pinkelman won the 2006 Nebraska Class B shot put crown with a throw of 59-9 3/4. He also took the discus title with a throw of 176-10. His personal shot put best of 63-1 came last season. The effort ranks sixth in Nebraska prep history. He has a 60-foot shot put throw and a discus career personal discus best of 193 feet this spring. At the 2005 state meet, he was the Class B shot put champion with a throw of 57-6 1/2 and the discus runner up with winning effort of 163 feet. Pinkelman also placed in both the shot put and the discus as a freshman.
"I really enjoyed recruiting Luke and his parents," Iowa State throws coach Dan O'Mara said. "He is a person who can make a big difference for us in the future and we are all really excited that he is coming to Iowa State."
Pinkelman earned first-team football all-state honors in the offensive line as a junior and as a senior. He was selected to play in the Nebraska Shrine Bowl and East-West football All-Star Games.
