DES MOINES ? For Iowa State's freshmen distance runners, Thursday night's 5,000-meter runs at the Drake Relays were the next step toward a successful initial collegiate outdoor track campaign. Cyclones Kiel Uhl and Guor Majak placed sixth and seventh, respectively on Drake Stadium's Jim Duncan Track, in the men's race.
Uhl's time of 14:12.23, narrowly missed the NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 14:12.0. Majak finished in 14:14.18. UTEP's Stephen Samoei defended his 2006 title, winning the race in 14:01.10.
“Kiel and Guor both ran good races,” Iowa State men's distance coach Corey Ihmels said. “They both competed hard and should feel good about their races. I feel we are on the right track for good performances at the Big 12 Championships.”
The Big 12 meet is May 11-13 in Lincoln, Neb.
