Hines 2nd in Dec; Majak 3rd in 10k

LINCOLN, Neb.- Iowa State multi-eventer Neil Hines returned to his home state on Friday for his final Big 12 Outdoor Championships and did not disappoint. The Morse Bluff, Neb. native set a personal best in the 400-meter dash with a 50.13 effort to move into second place after the first day of the decathlon on the Ed Weir Track.

ISU concluded the day with a strong performance in the 10,000-meter run, as Guor Majak placed third with a time of 30:39.21. Majak, a freshman, battled with two seniors, Kevin Chelimo from Texas Tech and Andrew Middleton from Texas, as the three distanced themselves from the rest of the pack with eight laps to go. Middleton edged Majak by two seconds after Chelimo won the race in 30:34.33.

“I did alright, I got top three which is what I was hoping for,” Majak said. “I just went into it seeing what was going to happen, and I did what I was supposed to do.”

Hines' first-day total of 3,837 points is only 169 behind leader Skyler Reising from Nebraska. Hines, a North Bend Central High School graduate, started the day with a solid 11.42 in the 100-meter dash and 22-1 3/4 in the long jump, both season bests. Hines threw the shot put 42-6, which dropped him to seventh place overall at midday.

“The shot put kind of motivated me for the high jump,” said Hines. “I tied my personal best there, and that feels like it's been a long time coming as well as in the 400-meter dash.”

The Cyclones senior used those events to rebound and quickly move up in the standings, ensuring a battle for first place in the decathlon on Saturday. In the high jump, Hines equaled his career best of 6-08 1/4. The effort pushed Hines up to third overall. The team captain then finished his Friday with a stellar 400-meter race to move into second.

“I thought he had a phenomenal day, he performed real well,” Iowa State jumps and vault coach Ron McEachran said. “The last two events he was phenomenal. We're halfway home. All of us have to calm down, refocus and he'll come out and compete real hard tomorrow. I know that.”

Iowa State earned six points on the day, with Majak's third-place finish. The Cyclones currently sit tied for sixth place, along with Kansas State and Texas A&M, with Saturday and Sunday to go. Texas leads with 19 points.

“It was a great first day, Neil finished with two strong events and Guor did a heck of a job,” Iowa State head men's track and field coach Steve Lynn said. “(Majak) beat a lot of really, really good people in there.”

The 110-meter hurdles of the decathlon open Saturday's events at 9:30 a.m. Saturday's events are scheduled to end at 7:25 p.m.
