DES MOINES, Iowa- For the Iowa State women's track and field team, the first day of the NCAA Midwest Regional track meet was filled with thrills and heartbreak. The Cyclones left Friday's competition advancing two runners to Saturday's finals but also bid farewell to two seniors.
Friday marked the end of a brilliant career by senior hurdler Rebecca Williams. The reigning Big 12 indoor champion jumped the gun and was disqualified from the 100-meter hurdle competition. Williams leaves the ISU squad as the fastest hurdler to ever compete in a Cyclone uniform. The
“Rebecca has had a tremendous career,” said sprints and hurdles coach Scott Roberts. “She took advantage of the time she had here with us and accomplished so many goals. I cannot thank her enough for her contributions. Not only is she a great competitor, but she is an amazing person with great dignity and class.”
After Williams' disqualification, Caffrey stepped up to the challenge in the 100-meter hurdle heats and crossed the finish line in her heat with a time of 13.67 seconds, advancing her to tomorrow's final. On Saturday, Caffrey will need a top-five finish to move her into the NCAA national championships. Caffrey currently ranks sixth after today's run.
“I ran a very safe race today,” said Caffrey. “It wasn't as quick as I wanted to run, but it got me to tomorrow's race. When I saw Rebecca jump I was shocked and it made me a little nervous. Hopefully tomorrow I can redeem myself and possibly qualify for nationals.”
Senior Sara Boisen advanced to Saturday's final with a stellar performance in the 400-meter hurdles. The
“I felt great,” said Boisen. “If my career ended on today's run I would be satisfied. It has been a blessing to be a Cyclone and everything I have accomplished is because of hard work, great coaching and fantastic teammates. Tomorrow I just want to run hard and be strong through the entire race.”
Senior Jenny Mockler competed for the final time in a Cyclone uniform. Mockler went out with a bang, recording her career-best time in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:07.90 seconds. The
“It is sad to say goodbye to Jenny and Rebecca today,” said head coach Dick Lee. “They are both great leaders by their actions and encouragement, but most of all they are great people. I think both will be very successful in whatever they choose to do in life.”
Long jumper Priya Hoze earned eighth-place with a leap of 19-07. Hoze turned heads at the Big 12 Conference outdoor meet on May 11th when she finished third with a career best leap of 20-3 ?. The senior will compete tomorrow along with teammate Agata Kosuda in the triple jump.
Freshman Lisa Koll capped off the day for the Cyclone squad finishing 10th overall with a 5,000-meter time of 16:49.70. The Fort Dodge native may not be finished yet. Koll is still eligible for an at-large berth into the NCAA national meet based off of her season-best time.
The Cyclones will begin Saturday's events at 3:45 p.m. with Caffrey in the 100-meter hurdles. Complete results will be posted on cyclones.com at the conclusion of the meet.
