AMES, Iowa- NCAA and Big 12 champion wrestler Trent Paulson and All-American and all-Big 12 basketball player Lyndsey Medders were named Iowa State's 2007 male and female athletes of the year, respectively, announced today by the ISU athletics department.
Paulson, a senior from Council Bluffs, Iowa, was instrumental in ISU's resurgence on the national collegiate wrestling scene, helping the Cyclones win their first conference crown in 20 years and place second as a team at the 2007 NCAA Championship.
The 157-pounder cruised to a 29-4 record in his final year in a Cyclone singlet, winning his second straight 157-pound Big 12 title. He capped off his career by capturing the 157-pound NCAA title with a 6-5 decision over Wisconsin's Craig Henning in the national championship match. Paulson, who earned team MVP honors, ended his career with a 115-20 mark, the 18th-most wins in school history.
A native of Los Angeles, Calif., Medders left her mark as one of the greatest floor leaders in ISU women's basketball history. A four-year starter at point guard, Medders has the fourth-most assists (719) in Big 12 history and ranks fourth on ISU's all-time scoring chart (1,449).
Medders ranked sixth nationally in assists (6.5) in 2006-07, pacing the Cyclones to a 26-9 overall mark and a second round NCAA Tournament appearance. Medders, who owns ISU's single-game (16), single-season (216) and career (719) assist records, earned first-team all-Big 12 honors for the second consecutive season and was an honorable mention All-American in 2006-07.
