NEW ORLEANS ? Three Iowa State men's track and field competitors have earned academic All-America status. Decathlon All-American Neil Hines, steeplechaser Jayden Russ and sprinter Jared Lewis were named academic All-Americans Friday by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The USTFCCCA honors Division I individuals for their academic and athletic achievements during the indoor and outdoor track season. To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, one must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 and obtain an NCAA automatic or provisional qualifying mark for the most recent indoor championships or an outdoor regional qualifying mark in their respective event.
Hines finished fourth in the decathlon at the NCAA Championship last month. He won the Big 12 multi-event title in May. Hines will graduate with a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering and a MBA from Iowa State in December. Russ, a junior who placed sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Big 12 outdoor meet, is a marketing major. Lewis, a sophomore sociology major, was the Big 12 runner-up indoors in the 60-meter dash.
