Asked about the secondary, Bolt was upbeat.
“They are getting better, coaches Rainey and Koonz are doing a great job,” Bolt said. “We've got Drenard Williams and Zac Sandvig at corner with Chris Singleton and Devin McDowell working hard, so there is great competition. Caleb Berg, Brandon Hunley, Stevie Johnson and James Smith are interchanging, working and competing for playing time.”
Bolt is high on Sandvig, a redshirt freshman who prepped at West Des Moines-Valley.
“He made steady improvement during the spring and continues to learn the position,” Bolt says. “We're very proud of him. He has great work ethic.”
For his part, Sandvig is taking nothing for granted.
“We started this six months ago when the new coaching staff came in, working hard to make an impression,” Sandvig said. “With this staff you must pay attention to detail, concentrating on what you are doing as a defensive back and not worrying about what the linemen and linebackers are learning."
Sandvig said the defense's rallying cry under head coach Gene Chizik is “hit and run.”
“We have heard that from the moment the coaches got here,” Sandvig said. “If you want to play in this defense, you must hit and run.”
The team will have its third scrimmage Wednesday.
