Sophomore Ann Gleason added three saves in net to record the shutout victory.
“I think we showed some positive things that we've been working on in the preseason,” ISU head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. “I think it was a good mark to see where we need to be by our first game. Overall, I'm pleased. I'm happy with the result and the effort.”
Reid got the scoring started in the 14th minute, taking a centering pass from senior Brittanie Waddell at midfield before speeding past the Creighton defense and beating Bluejay goalkeeper Kristen Casey with a shot into the bottom right corner of the net.
“Elise really had a great effort to put herself into position to score,” said Hornbacher. “She's got great speed on the ball and she just capitalized on her opportunity to finish. It's good to see that early in the season.”
After the remainder of the first period went scoreless, Witte controlled a long pass into the offensive zone, faked her way past a defender and bent a shot from the left corner of the 18-yard box into the top right corner of the net.
“Witte just did a good job of seeing the net and seeing that she had the keeper out of position and she had a really nice placement on her shot,” said Hornbacher.
Gleason, along with the Cyclone defense, kept the Bluejays off the scoreboard the rest of the way to preserve the shutout.
“We created some good opportunities,” said Hornbacher. “We have a long way to go but I'm pleased with where we are.”
The Cyclones return to action Saturday, August 25 when they face intrastate rival Drake in their second, and final exhibition game. The match is scheduled for
