DES MOINES, Iowa ? Erin Witte scored her second goal of the exhibition season, but the Iowa State soccer team was defeated by Drake, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Drake Stadium.
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard first in the 38th minute. Melissa Lewis took a cross just two yards in front of the ISU net, leaving Cyclone goalkeeper Ann Gleason helpless.
Drake dug the hole deeper in the 60th minute when Sinead Brown's header off a corner kick found the back of the net.
Witte took a Tori Johnson pass on the right goal line in the 73rd minute before making a nifty move past a Drake defender and flicking the ball past the on-coming Bulldog goalkeeper to cut the deficit in half. However, the Cyclones couldn't muster the equalizer in the final minutes and Drake took the 2-1 victory.
Gleason made five saves for the Cyclones, while Drake's Jenny Schroeder corralled two.
“This is the reason why we play exhibition matches,” said ISU head coach Rebecca Hornbacher. “Our individual defending was not good enough today and that attributed to both of Drake's goals. We have some things to work on this upcoming week and we will be prepared for our first match.”
