Tennis Opens Up Strong at Gopher Invite

AMES, Iowa ? More solid singles performances by freshman Erin Karonis and three wins in doubles action highlighted the Cyclone tennis team's opening day at the Gopher Invitational Friday.

After reaching the singles bracket finals at the Drake Invitational last weekend, Karonis opened up play Friday with two victories. Karonis first defeated Hannah Robinson of Louisiana State in two sets, 6-3, 6-2. Her second win came against Minnesota's Danielle Mousseau in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 6-0.

In doubles play, three of four Cyclone pairs recorded wins. Alyssa Palen and Caitlin Loprinzi teamed up to defeat Eastern Michigan's Joanna Woo and Emma Czarnecki, 8-4. Reka Keleman and Chrissy Derouin took down another EMU pair of Aditi Krishnan and Tina Bestehorn, 8-2. In the star doubles bracket, Iowa State's Dora Losonczy paired with LSU's Kylie Adameck to defeat Templin and Bardenwerper of Gustavus Adolphus, 8-5.

Freshman Liza Wischer also recorded a win in the gold singles bracket by defeating Kylie Adameck of LSU, 6-2, 6-3, but Wischer fell in the quarterfinals to Northern Iowa's Moraes, 6-2, 7-6.

In the play-in round, Keleman defeated Bardenwerper of GAC, 6-2, 6-3, before falling to EMU's Flavia Micati in a tie-breaer, 6-4, 1-6, 10-6.

Palen also recorded a singles win in the consolation bracket after falling to GAC's Krebsbach 7-6(4), 7-6(4) in her opening match.

The Cyclones will resume play Saturday at 9 a.m.
