AMES, Iowa- Nine members of the Iowa State sprint squad will travel to Fayetteville, Ark. to compete in Friday's Arkansas Invitational at the Randal Tyson Track Center. The one-day meet will be a chance for ISU runners to get a feel for the track that will play host to the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships on March 14-15.
Iowa State's Jared Lewis and Lashawn Wright are expected to be two of the meet's top competitors in the 60-meter dash. Both athletes tallied first-place finishes in the event at the Holiday Preview on Dec. 7 in Ames. Wright clocked a time of 7.63 and Lewis crossed the line in 6.87, just 13 hundredths of a second shy of provisionally qualifying.
“We want to get our short sprinters the experience of running on a banked track as well as competing on a track that will host the national championships,” said sprints and hurdles coach Ronnie Williams. “This meet is going to be a great stepping stone for our athletes and a good chance to get their feet wet early in the season.”
Running events begin at 1 p.m. with the mile run. Other ISU athletes competing at the invite include Brittney Machacek, Monique Hawkins and Leia Jackson. On the men's side, Sterling Frison, Marvin Cosby, Derron Montgomery and Justin Peel will be in action. Complete results will be posted following the conclusion of the meet.
