MINNEAPOLIS ? Iowa State had its best meet of the season, posting a score of 193.625, but it wasn't enough to beat Minnesota Saturday at The Sports Pavilion. The Gophers also had their best showing of the season coming from behind to earn the 193.775-193.625 win.
Jasmine Thompson led the Cyclones by winning the floor on her way to the all-around title with a score of 39.125. Nikki Dilbert also won the vault and finished third in the all-around, just .125 behind Thompson. Both Thompson and Dilbert posted the best all-around scores of their Iowa State careers.
“We knew coming in that we weren't at full strength , so we didn't expect a monster score,” head coach Jay Ronayne said. “We used this opportunity to eliminate some of the mistakes we made in the first two meets and we still have a long road ahead. We have a lot of improvements to make. I do feel this team is heading in the right direction, though.”
The Cyclones came out strong, taking a 48.750-48.075 lead after the first rotation. The 48.750 team score was the highest on bars this season by more then a full point. Thompson and Ceilia Maccani led Iowa State with scores of 9.775. Jody McKellar added a career-high 9.750 , while Dilbert set her season best with a 9.750. Jacquelyn Holmes also posted a career best on bars with a 9.700.
Iowa State increased its lead in rotation two, scoring a 48.400 on vault to take a 97.150-96.300 lead. Dilbert won the vault while setting a season-high with a 9.825.Thompson and Katie Sweetin scored a 9.700 to aid the Iowa State cause. Minnesota's Carmelina Carabajal received a 9.800 on bars to win the event.
Minnesota inched back into the meet in the third rotation, posting a 48.850 on beam, while Iowa State scored a 47.850 on the floor, and ISU trailed 145.150-145.000. Thompson led the Cyclones with a season-high 9.825, while Dilbert added a 9.675. All six competitors scored at least 9.725 on the beam for the Gophers, led by Carmelina Carabajal who tallied a 9.875.
Iowa State had a strong 48.625 on beam in the last rotation , but Minnesota scored an impressive 48.625 on the floor to claim the win. Thompson continued her solid night, getting a score of 9.825. Maccani tied her career-high with a 9.750 and McKellar set a career-best with a score of 9.725. Minnesota recorded two scores of 9.8 or better on the floor to come away with the win.
Iowa State will have two weeks off before hosting Stanford on Sunday, Feb. 10, at Hilton Coliseum. The meet has a scheduled 2 p.m. start.
