“Our defense was solid the whole match,” head coach Wendy Dillinger said. “Mary Kate (McLaughlin), (Lauren) Fader, Emily (Hejlik) and Tori (Johnson) played tough. Ann (Gleason) was solid in net and it was good to get her a shutout.”
By drawing, the Cyclones (4-6-1, 0-2-1) earned one point in the league standings, with wins counting for three points and losses rendering no points.
“We played well,” Dillinger said. “We battled for the whole 110 minutes and created some good opportunities on the attack. Tonight was a good step in overall team defense. We need to continue to build on that and finish our opportunities.”
Sophomore midfielder Jordan Bishop led Iowa State with a season-high tying four shots. The Carrollton, Texas, native fired three shots on net. Freshman defender Emily Hejlik was close behind with a season-best three shots, with two on goal.
Despite not finding the back of the net, Iowa State dominated the first half statistically, holding a 10-1 shots advantage over the Bears (4-5-2, 0-1-1). The Cyclones had seven shots on goal while the Bears had none.
The second half would be a different story. Baylor outshot ISU 9-4, with three of them on frame. At the end of regulation, the Cyclones held a 14-10 shot edge and a 3-1 corner kick advantage.
Little changed in overtime as each team registered a shot on goal while the Bears held a 4-1 shots lead.
Dillinger was impressed with the performance of freshman Rachel Brcic who has not seen much action this season but made her first career start Friday.
“(Rachel) Brcic had a huge performance on both sides of the ball,” Dillinger said. “She shut down their midfield and helped us control the ball.”
The Cyclones are back on the pitch Sunday when they travel to Austin, Texas for a noon contest with Texas.
