IOWA CITY, Iowa ? The Iowa State women's basketball team was out of sync all day and uncharacteristically sent Iowa to the free throw line 24 times, where it scored 20 of its points, as the Hawkeyes knocked off the Cyclones, 66-46, Sunday afternoon in the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
The loss drops the Cyclones to 5-2 this season, while Iowa improved to 5-4. It was the first instate loss for Iowa State since falling at Iowa during the 2004-05 season.

“I thought Iowa played a great game,” Iowa State head coach Bill Fennelly said. “We obviously struggled on both sides of the floor. You can't put a great free throw shooting team on the line and we did 24 times.”
Iowa sophomore Kachine Alexander had a standout day, scoring 18 points and contributing eight boards. Kansas State transfer JoAnn Hamlin had a double-double for Iowa with 18 points and 10 rebounds. The Hawkeyes shot 40.7 percent from the field, but their 83.3 percent shooting from the charity stripe is what made the difference.
Iowa State junior Alison Lacey led the Cyclones with 14 points and five rebounds, while Heather Ezell had 12 points, including three of ISU's four treys, and five rebounds. Freshman Whitney Williams led ISU with five assists. Iowa held ISU to 35.8 percent shooting and just 17.4 percent from beyond the arc.
The Cyclones trailed 38-27 at halftime, after getting in foul trouble early. Iowa State committed 12 fouls in the first half, sending Iowa to the charity stripe 11 times, where the Hawkeyes hit nine shots.
The game started slow as it took three minutes into the game for either team to get a basket, before Alison Lacey scored on a conventional three-point play. The Cyclones went 1-for-9, but grabbed seven rebounds, including five off the offensive glass, while Iowa went 0-for-2 over the first four and a half minutes of the contest.
After Iowa took a 13-10 lead, the Cyclones tied the game with a three-pointer by Lacey. The game went back and forth from there until Iowa went on a 10-0 run, including six points from Alexander, to open a 27-18 advantage. ISU cut the margin to seven (30-23) on a field goal by Toccara Ross, but Iowa answered with four more points. Hamlin hit four free throws over the last two and a half minutes and Kristi Smith put in a field goal with 24 seconds left to give the Hawkeyes the 11-point halftime advantage.
The second half started the same way, as Iowa State sent the Hawkeyes to the line for six free throws over the first three and a half minutes while Iowa opened up the lead to 15, 46-31. The Cyclones cut the lead, 48-35, on a basket by Lacey, but Iowa went on an 11-2 run to put the game out of reach, 59-36.
The Cyclones will play their final instate rivalry game of the season Thursday when they play host to the Drake Bulldogs at 7 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum. The game against Drake will be the first in a string of eight straight for ISU at home.
