AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State went on a 9-0 run to open the second half en route to defeating Kansas, 51-42, Saturday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum. Alison Lacey scored 13 second-half points, while Jocelyn Anderson chipped in eight in the final 20 minutes to spark the Cyclones to the victory.
Iowa State improved to 18-10 overall and 7-8 in the Big 12 to close out the home portion of the regular-season slate. Kansas dropped to 15-13 overall and 4-11 in the league. ISU will wrap up the regular season on Wednesday at Nebraska when it faces the Huskers at 7 p.m. at the Devaney Center.
Lacey led the Cyclones with 19 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Kelsey Bolte was ISU's only other double-digit scorer with 11 points. Anderson finished with eight points and three rebounds, while rewriting the Iowa State single-season record for blocked shots. Anderson rejected two Jayhawk shot attempts, to set the single-season record at 63, passing Nicky Wieben's record of 62 set last year.
Iowa State shot 40 percent for the contest, after going 11-of-22 in the second half. The Cyclones held Kansas to 29.6 percent shooting, the first time since the end of December an ISU opponent has shot less than 30 percent. KU outrebounded the Cyclones, 41-29.
“I think we came out ready to go in the second half,” Lacey said. “We called a couple plays to get it inside to Jocelyn, and we were able to get it inside. That's what we tried to do coming out of halftime.”
Iowa State came out of the break to score nine straight points, while holding the Jayhawks scoreless over the first three and a half minutes of the second half, building a 29-18 Cyclone advantage. Anderson had four points and Bolte hit a trey from the corner to build the 11-point lead.
KU cut the lead to eight, 29-21, but the Cyclones went to Anderson for back-to-back buckets and Lacey added a jumper in the lane to increase their margin to 14, 35-21. The Jayhawks went on a 7-0 run, with scoring from three different players to cut the deficit to seven, 35-28, at the halfway point of the second half.
Kansas again scored eight unanswered points to get as close as five points, 41-36, with just under five minutes remaining, but Lacey lobbed up a shot as the shot clock was about to expire, getting the basket and the foul, to push the Cyclones back up by eight, 44-36. KU cut the lead to six, 48-42, with a minute left but Lacey and Amanda Nisleit hit three free throws at the end to seal the win.
The Cyclones carried a 20-18 lead into the break. Iowa State took its largest lead of the half with just under a minute to play, 20-16, on a running layup and a pair of free throws by Lacey.
Kansas' largest lead of the first period came with 10 minutes to go as the Jayhawks got consecutive baskets for a 12-7 lead. The Cyclones, however, answered with a 7-0 run, to reclaim the lead on a three-pointer by Heather Ezell. Neither team shot the ball well in the first half, as Kansas hit 30.8 percent from the field and Iowa State shot 30.4 percent. The Jayhawks outrebounded ISU, 19-14, in the first period.
