AMES, IOWA - Iowa State's tennis team fell to the No. 74 Colorado Buffaloes on Friday, 7-0. With the win, the Buffaloes move to 8-10 on the season, and 5-3 in the Big 12. ISU is 4-11 overall.
Colorado swept the doubles competition, defeating all three of its Cyclone foes. At the No. 1 spot, Monica Milewski and Camila Belassi defeated Chrissy Derouin and Erin Karonis, 8-0. At No. 2 doubles, Melisa Esposito and Franziska Jendrian moved to 7-4 this season after their victory over Caitlin Loprinzi and Kara Hickey. In the No. 3 hole, Gleisy Torres Torres and Abbie Probert defeated Liza Wischer and Alyssa Palen, 8-2.
At No. 1 singles, Karonis and Milewski, played a close first set with Milewski winning a tiebreaker over Karonis, 7-0. Milewski, a native of Park Ridge, Ill., also won the second set, 6-1. Hickey and Belassi played a competitive match at No. 2 doubles. Hickey won the first set, 6-3, but was defeated in the final two sets, 4-6, 2-6.
"I though Kara really played a great match today," said ISU head coach Michele Conlon. "It was nice to see her get back in the flow of the game, and it is the perfect time of year for her to do so."
No. 3 singles was also a battle, as Loprinzi and Torres Torres played a tight first set, with Torres Torres winning in a tiebreaker by a score of 7-1. Torres Torres was able to win the second set, 6-3. Reka Kelemen and Jendrian followed suit with their tussle at No. 6 singles. Jendrian won the first set, 6-3, but went down 4-0 early in the second set of the match but fought back from the deficit to win six straight games and the match.
"We need to keep working on capitalizing on big points," said Conlon. "We haven't been far away from a win in a lot of these losses."
ISU will play host to the Missouri Tigers Saturday afternoon at 3:30. Saturday is Senior Day for the Cyclones, marking the last home match for ISU seniors Caitlin Loprinzi and Chrissy Derouin.
