AMES, Iowa - The Missouri Tigers proved to be too much for the Iowa State women's tennis squad, defeating the Cyclones, 7-0. Iowa State is 4-12 on the season. The Tigers are 10-11 on the year, and 2-8 in the Big 12.
It was Senior Day for the Cyclones as ISU sent off seniors Caitlin Loprinzi and Chrissy Derouin. ISU head coach Michele Conlon spoke to the crowd about what Loprinzi and Derouin have meant to the Iowa State tennis program. After Conlon was through, the other five team members presented roses to the pair.
To start of the meet, ISU was swept in doubles competition, but it was my no means easy for the Tigers. At No. 2 doubles, Loprinzi and Kara Hickey and Missouri's Mallory Weber and Chrissy Svetlic were tied early on at 3-3. Weber and Giuggioli won five of the last six games, taking the match, 8-4. At No. 3 doubles, Kaitlyn Ritchie and Jessica Giuggioli swept Liza Wischer and Alyssa Palen, 8-0. At No. 1 doubles, Derouin and freshman Erin Karonis went down early to Kaitlin Dunham and Sofia Ayala, but rallied to win five straight games and eventually force a tiebreaker at 7-7. Dunham and Ayala won the tiebreaker, 7-4.
In singles play, Karonis and Weber played a hard fought match, with Karonis taking the first set, 6-2, but losing the next two sets, 2-6, 5-7.
"Erin really played with a lot of toughness," said Conlon. "She was playing injured, but fought through the pain and played a great match."
At the No. 2 spot, Hickey, a native of Columbia, Mo., played a back-and-forth match with Giuggioli, winning a tiebreaker to take the first set, 7-6. Giuggioli took command of the second set, after an early 2-2 tie. She won the set, 6-3. She took the match, sweeping Hickey in the third set, 6-0. At No. 3 singles, Loprinzi, attempted to get a win in her last match at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center. She lost the first set, 5-7, but fought back to win the second set, 6-3. Missouri's Svetlic was able to take the match, winning the third set, 6-1. At No. 6 singles, Ayala defeated Wischer, 6-2, 6-4.
"The score of the meet doesn't reflect the matches," said Conlon. "We fought pretty hard in all of our matches. It is a credit to our players for fighting as hard as they did."
ISU will wrap up the Big 12 regular season next weekend. It will travel to Kansas State on Friday for a 10 a.m. match. Friday's match will be followed with a dual on Sunday against the Kansas Jayhawks at 11 a.m.
