MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Iowa State tennis team was swept by the Kansas State Wildcats, 7-0, on Friday. Iowa State is 4-13 on the season and remains winless in conference play. KSU moves to 7-12 on the season and is 2-7 in the Big 12.
"I thought we were unable to stay in the lead in certain spots," said ISU assistant coach Armando Espinosa. "That is something we have had trouble doing all season and today was no exception."
In doubles play, KSU's Olga Klimova and Katerina Kudlackova defeated Chrissy Derouin and Kara Hickey, 8-5. At No. 2 doubles, Antea Huljev and Vanessa Cottin upended Caitlin Loprinzi and Alyssa Palen, 8-4. At the No. 3 spot, Reka Kelemen and Liza Wischer were also defeated, 8-3.
In singles play, the Wildcats' Yrureta defeated Erin Karonis, 6-3, 6-1. At the No. 2 spot, ISU's Hickey lost the first set, 2-6, but came back to win the second set over Huljev, 6-4. Hickey and Huljev played a tiebreaker in the place of a third set, since the match had already been decided. Huljev won the tiebreaker, 10-7.
In the No. 3 slot, Kudlackova defeated Loprinzi, 7-5, 6-2. At No. 4 singles, Cottin defeated Palen, 6-2, 6-2. At the No. 5 spot, Natasha Vieira was victorious over Wischer, 6-3, 6-2. The Wildcats' Pauline Guemas was also victorious in her singles match.
The Cyclones head to Lawrence next to take on the Kansas Jayhawks Sunday at 11 a.m.
