AMES, Iowa ? Nikki Dilbert was named the Janet Anson ?Key' Gymnast of the Year at the annual awards banquet held Saturday at the Gateway.
The award is given to Iowa State's most outstanding gymnast and is named after Anson, an eight-time All-American and current volunteer assistant coach with the Cyclones.
“Nikki as our MVP is a no brainer,” ISU head coach Jay Ronayne said. “She was our most consistent all-arounder and a leader in many ways.”
Dilbert, a sophomore from Champlin, Minn., set career highs in all four events, as well as in the all-around. She claimed the all-around title with a 39.325 against Stanford. She was one of two Cyclones to compete as an all-arounder in all 12 Iowa State meets this season.
Jacquelyn Holmes was named ISU Freshman of the Year. Holmes, a Charlotte, N.C., native, appeared on vault, bars and floor before an injury ended her season early. She set highs of 9.700 on both vault and beam.
The Most Improved Gymnast award went to Ceilia Maccani. After appearing only on bars last season, the junior from Racine, Wis., was a regular on vault, bars and beam. Maccani improved as the season went on, earning fifth place on vault and eighth on bars at the Big 12 Championship.
Jennifer Hornbaker, a sophomore from Lawrence, Kan., who redshirted after suffering a preseason injury was given the Above and Beyond Award. This award is given to the individual who makes a greater contribution to the team than is required.
The banquet drew an up and down 2008 season to a close. The Cyclones will lose just one senior from this team and will bring the momentum of a second-place finish at the Big 12 Championship into next year.
“We lose Kristy Bellinger next year and we will miss her, but looking to the next two years we will have the remainder of the team returning,” Ronayne said. “I think the competitive experience we will be returning the next two years will be invaluable to reaching our goals of being the best in the Big 12, and being a top gymnastics team in the country.”
