AMES, Iowa? The Iowa State gymnastics team will take center stage this winter, mere months after home-grown female gymnasts excelled for the United States at the Olympics.
With the United States women's team taking the silver medal, Nastia Liukin capturing gold in the all-around and West Des Moines, Iowa, native Shawn Johnson, bringing a gold and three silvers back to her studio approximately 40 miles from Ames, a gymnastics buzz certainty has been generated in central Iowa.
“I think the Olympics are great for gymnastics, especially with Shawn Johnson competing,” junior Nikki Dilbert said. “I think Shawn will help the growth of gymnastics in Iowa and it should be great to see all the little kids starting because of it. Hopefully people want to see what we can do and we hope we can accomplish great things like Shawn did.”
And with the added interest the Olympic success should bring, the ISU gymnasts are extra-motivated to produce for their fans.
“I think it motivates our team to know that people have watched the Olympics and are looking to see good, exciting gymnastics,” junior Jody McKellar said.
“I am very excited for this season,” Dilbert said. “Seeing them (the U.S. team) and how their hard work paid off makes me want to get in the gym and be rewarded like they were. We feel like if the U.S. team can achieve great things, so can we.”
Dilbert admits that even though she has been preparing hard for the upcoming campaign, she found time to follow the U.S. gymnastics team and soak in the excitement she hopes to produce for Cyclone fans this winter.
“I stayed up late every night they were competing,” Dilbert said. “When they were on, I was on my couch watching. It was rewarding to see girls doing their best and having the outcomes they deserved.”
