AMES, Iowa ? Mary Bisenius led three Iowa State players in double figures with 12 kills and hit .526 to earn tournament Most Valuable Player honors and help Iowa State to the 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-16) win over Xavier at the Iowa State Tournament Saturday evening. With the win, ISU finishes 3-0 at the tournament, capturing the title for the third straight season with the last two events being held at Iowa (2006) and Drake (2007).
The Cyclones hit an impressive .385 as a team against Xavier, an NCAA Tournament qualifier a year ago. ISU out blocked the Musketeers, nine to four, and held them to a .155 hitting percentage.

“I thought we really executed well in this match,” Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson said. “We passed the ball pretty well and when you do that you can really get into a nice rhythm.”
Joining Bisenius in double-digits for Iowa State (8-3) were fellow all-tournament team members Victoria Henson and Rachel Hockaday with 11 kills each. Hockaday got her 11 kills on 16 swings with no attack errors for a .688 hitting percentage, which ties for the sixth best single-match percentage in school history.
In the three-match tournament, Bisenius averaged 3.22 kills and hit .356 to earn MVP honors. It marks the second consecutive season that Bisenius, a Sioux City native, has captured MVP accolades at the tournament that hosts three of the four state universities.
Ashley Mass also made the all-tournament team and had 17 digs in the win over Xavier. Mass averaged an incredible 6.22 digs per set in the tournament.
Iowa State jumped on Xavier early in the first set and never let up. The Cyclones took a 15-7 lead behind nine kills on their first 11 attacks. ISU went on to win the set 25-18 and set the tone for the entire match with a .421 first set hitting percentage. Mass seemed to scoop up everything the Musketeers hit, digging nine balls in the frame.
The Cyclones continued the strong defense in the second set, blocking five Xavier attacks to win 25-17 despite seeing a drop in their hitting efficiency. ISU hit just .208 but held the Musketeers to a .000 percentage to take the win.
In the third set, ISU got its offense back on track, ripping 17 kills at a .517 clip to earn its third straight sweep with a 25-16 win.
The Musketeers (5-4) got a match-high 13 kills from Lauren Kaminsky.
Iowa State will be back in action Wednesday as it opens Big 12 play hosting Texas A&M at 6:30 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum.
