AMES, Iowa? The Iowa State gymnastics team is looking to build on last year's late-season success by getting off to a strong start in 2009. The Cyclones are practicing nearly four hours a day as they prepare for their Jan. 9 opener against Missouri at Hilton Coliseum in Ames.
“We are starting off this year fresh,” junior Melanie Tham said. “We are doing a lot of conditioning. Our mentality is that we are going to win our first meet and every meet after that. We are working very hard and have a really good mindset. We want to start off hard from the beginning instead of waiting until the end of the season.”

Fellow Junior Katie Sweetin echoed Tham's sentiment.
“Since day one when we walked in the gym there has been an attitude adjustment,” she said. “Everyone is really motivated and excited to work hard. We have goals set for the beginning and we are not going to settle for anything less than that."
