09.05.2008 | Football
The Cyclone football team is ready to kick off in its second game of the year vs. Kent State. In order to give Cyclone fans an inside look at the Iowa State football team, senior wide receiver Euseph Messiah will be posting a weekly blog at cyclones.com on Friday of each week throughout the football season.
Messiah has a clean slate to talk all things related to his life, academics, Cyclone football and other daily hurdles of being a Division I student-athlete.
Week 2
Well hello again Cyclone fans! A week has gone by since my last blog and obviously things are going well for the Iowa State football team. Last Thursday we opened our season against a good South Dakota State team and came away with a 44-17 victory. I'm hoping that this is a mark of how our season will continue.
Before I begin writing about our preparation for our upcoming game against Kent State, I'd like to talk about my family and their current involvement in my life. Although I have two older sisters and an older brother, the members of my family that attend our football games consist of my father Eustace, my mother Angela and my 9-year-old little sister Aleacia. They have managed to attend many Iowa State football games over the past four years and are true Cyclone fans. I wanted to mention a little something about them. Since our game was on Thursday last week, I had a good portion of the weekend to spend with them before they flew back home to San Antonio, Texas at the end of the week. These three people are my backbone after competitions and whether it's a win or a loss, they show me everyday how I am blessed.

Week 1 |
|
After our game on Thursday, we had meetings and workouts on Friday and then immediately started to prepare for our next game against Kent State. Now obviously this will be an important game for us. If anyone doesn't recall, we lost our first game of the 2007 season 23-14 (to Kent State) and obviously we remember that game. They are a very good team. Now for me, (and I also probably speak for the team) last year's game with Kent State was a tough loss that left many questions. Were we not prepared enough? What did we need to do in practice to improve?
Well, to be honest, I believe that we were well prepared last year. The coaches did nothing but coach hard and all of the players had a competitive attitude, but like I said in my first blog, there's something different about the team now compared to last year. One of our biggest problems last year was our inability to successfully finish games and coach Chizik constantly reminds us of that. We make sure we have an attitude to play games through all four quarters. I'm convinced, Cyclone fans, that we'll keep this mindset as we enter the game on Saturday.
I hope many of you will be able to attend our game on Saturday because we plan to keep our positive mentality going strong. Kent State is a very good team and we know that this will be a great matchup for us. Until next time, GO CYCLONES!
