Cyclone Notebook
? Iowa State is in its 39th season of gymnastics. The Cyclones have a 397-438-4 all-time record.
? The Cyclones travel to Auburn, Ala., for their first road test of the season when they battle No. 6 Auburn Friday at 7 p.m. at Beard-Eaves Memorial Coliseum.
The Series
? Iowa State holds a 5-3-1 all-time edge in the series with Auburn. The last meeting was April 12, 2008, at the NCAA Northeast Regional when the Tigers downed the Cyclones, 195.150-194.200. Iowa State last defeated Auburn Jan. 5, 2007, in Cancun, Mexico (195.600-194.150).
Last Time Out
? ISU scored a 194.775, a 1.6-point improvement from its Jan. 16 season-opening output against Missouri, against No. 16 Nebraska. Despite the progress, the Cyclones fell to the Cornhuskers 195.550-194.775 Jan. 16 in Hilton Coliseum in Ames.
Cyclones Move Up to 18
? The Cyclones' marked improvement helped them shoot up six places in the national rankings to 18th. It is the highest the program has been ranked since the beginning of the 2008 campaign.
Ronayne Reunion
? Iowa State head coach Jay Ronayne takes the Cyclones back to the location of his previous coaching position, Auburn, for the first time Friday. Ronayne spent four seasons as the lead assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the Tigers. While at Auburn, Ronayne saw the program reach four consecutive NCAA Regional Championships, one NCAA Championship and garner three All-Americans.
What a Difference a Year Makes
? In its first two meets, Iowa State has scored a combined 387.950. After the opening two competitions last season, the Cyclones had scored a combined 384.875. The over three-point increase has the Cyclones scoring an average of 1.54 points higher per meet than at this point last season.
Raising the Bar on Bars
? The Cyclones put together their best rotation on the young season with a 48.925 on bars against Nebraska Jan. 16. A pair of career-best performances by sophomore Jacquelyn Holmes (9.750) and junior Jody McKellar (9.850) buoyed the strong performance. McKellar's efforts resulted her sharing the event title with Jasmine Thompson.
Nationally Ranked on Floor and Beam
? After two meets, Iowa State stands among the nation's best on a pair of events. The Cyclones are 12th on floor with an average score of 48.762 and 13th on balance beam (48.762).
12 Straight Regionals
? Iowa State will look to advance to its 13th consecutive regional competition in 2009. An inspired second-place showing at the 2008 Big 12 Championship, cemented the Cyclones' trip to the Northeast Regional meet at State College, Penn., last season.
Healthy Cyclones
? To put it mildly, the Cyclones were injury plagued in 2008 as only six gymnasts were able to compete in all 12 meets. This season, injury issues appear to be slim. Both sophomore Jacquelyn Holmes and junior Megan Barnes missed significant action in 2008 due to injury and have been in the ISU lineup in both meets this season.
Experience not an Issue for ISU
? The Cyclones have a squad full of seasoned veterans. ISU lost only one letterwinner from the 2008 campaign and returns 11. With a squad hit hard by injuries last year, opportunities for new gymnasts to compete were plentiful and with that came vital experience as Iowa State had 12 gymnasts who had meet experience before the start of the 2009 season.
ISU Ninth in Average Home Attendance in 2008
? ISU closed out last season with the ninth highest home average attendance at 2,590. The Cyclones' figure was tops in the Big 12 with Missouri closest at 11th (2,267).
Big 12 Nail Biter
? The Cyclones led the 2008 Big 12 Championships until the last competitor of the meet. Oklahoma's Kiara Redmond-Sturms' (the conference gymnast of the year) 9.950 vault gave the Sooners the title by .1 of a point over ISU.
A Closer Look At No. 6 Auburn (1-2)
? The Tigers are coming off a 196.500-196.250 loss at No. 1 Florida Jan. 16. Auburn has also recorded a loss to Alabama (195.675-195.650) while downing Illinois-Chicago 196.375-193.850.
? Auburn is ranked in the top-10 nationally in all four events. The Tigers sit second on floor (49.150), seventh on balance beam (49.017), eighth on bars (48.917) and 10th on vault (49.008).
? The Tigers boast a pair of gymnasts ranked in the top-10 nationally in the all-around. A.J. Mills is fifth with an average score of 39.383 and Lindsey Puckett is 10th (39.258).
? In 2008, Auburn advanced to the NCAA Northeast Regional where the Tigers ended their season with a fourth-place finish.
? Head coach Jeff Thompson is in 10th season at Auburn. The two-time Southeastern Conference and Central Region Coach-of-the-Year winner is a 1986 Kentucky graduate. He has coached at Kentucky, Illinois and Wisconsin before taking over at Auburn.
