AMES, Iowa ? Iowa State's Lisa Koll is back on track, literally. In her 2009 track and field season debut, the Fort Dodge native broke the Iowa State record for the 3,000-meter race with a time of 9:09.92 at the ISU Open Saturday at the Lied Recreation Athletic Center. The five-time all-American broke from the pack very early, to better her previous school mark of 9:15.58. She also bettered the Lied Center record of 9:13.13 set by NCAA champion Claire Eichner of Wisconsin in 1993.
“Really I figured I would start out at 9:20 pace because I didn't want to go out too fast and then feel like I had to catch up,” Koll said. “But I went out too fast. I thought I might as well go for it and try it, and I felt really good the whole time.”

While the 3,000-meter race may not be junior's favorite race, Koll knows that this is preparation for a bigger personal goal.
“I'm really excited to use this to propel it to the 5,000-meters,” Koll said. “I'm more excited about how I felt during (the race) than the time. I never have felt that comfortable running that fast. When I ran 9:15 last year, it was really hard and it didn't feel as hard this year.”
The race was Koll's first since the Olympic Trials. ISU head coach Corey Ihmels said the long rest was a factor in her performance.
"This was her first 3k since she has taken her performances to another level," Ihmels. "Lisa runs well when she can get out and set up the pace. To run 9:09 all by yourself is really impressive. She has made the commitment and it shows."
Overall, Ihmels said he told his teams after the meet that there is work to be done.
"I thought overall we had a good meet, but not a great meet," Ihmels said. "I think we learned a lot about where we are individually. We've got three weeks until the (Iowa State) Classic so there is time to work and that is what we will be doing."
ISU junior Jenna Caffrey earned her second straight victory on her home track. The Burlington native gained first place in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.71, edging out Iowa Central's AG Bradford by 0.19 seconds.
“We are really happy where (Caffrey) is right now, she has gained a lot of confidence since the start of the season,” said Iowa State assistant coach Nate Wiens. “She was out doing a lot of events, but we focused her down on the hurdles a little bit more. She's doing all these events but still able to come back and run close to her personal record, and hopefully in two weeks be able to come out and really move beyond that mark.”
Freshman Kianna Elahi took first place in the 600-yard run with a time of 1:24.15. The Omaha Millard North track and field standout has had a great start to her short career, taking first place in the 400-meter dash at the Holiday Preview in December.
A jam-packed men's 3,000-meter race featured a total of nine Cyclone distance runners, all running their first race of 2009. Cross country all-American Guor Marial led the Cyclones with a third-place finish in 8:16.22, while all-American Hillary Bor ended up sixth with a time of 8:20.52. Senior Kiel Uhl finished in ninth and rounding out the top 10 was sophomore Clayton Carper.
Personal bests were set by three Cyclones in the men's shot put. Sophomore Luke Pinkelman put up a 56-05.75 toss, good enough for first place, while senior Zac Brouilette finished in second with a 54-04.50 effort. Freshman Mitch Weber also put up a personal best in the shot put, with a 49-10.50 throw. In the women's shot put, sophomore Britta Christofferson took second place with a 46-11.00 mark. Coming in third was freshman Danielle Frere, and freshman Laishema Hampton was fifth.
Council Bluffs' Tiffanie Synacek of Iowa State was runner up in the high jump for the second consecutive year at the ISU Open. Three jumpers tied with a best leap of 5-06.00, with Baker University's Ashlee Miller earning first place on misses.
The Cyclones will travel to Lincoln, Neb. for the Adidas Classic on Jan. 31. Iowa State will play host to the ISU Classic on Feb. 12, one of the largest indoor collegiate meets in the nation.
